You might be
surprised by the truth.
Let’s talk GMO aka genetically modified organisms. This
stuff shows up in 80% of US’s conventional processed food. Not to mention
canola, corn, soy and cotton are the biggest GMO crops in the United States.
But what does that all mean?
- GMOs are plants (or animals!) that have been spliced with DNA from another species to create hybrids that couldn’t exist in nature. We are talking frankenfood here.
- Research is starting show that there are connections between GMOs and health and environmental problems. Read more here.
- It is banned or heavily restricted in 50 nations around the world, including Japan, the entire European Union and Australia.
- ...And yet most Americans couldn’t tell you what GMO means or if it’s in their food.
So where do you
start?
The NonGMO Project is an excellent resource. They have
lists of products, restaurants and
retailers that are certified GMO-free, not to mention a great deal of
interesting articles pertaining to GMOs.
I'm always so happy to hear about mom's that are actually paying attention to what is in their family's food. I'm mostly paranoid about the rBST hormones and funky preservatives. Have you ever read "Skinny Bitch"? If you haven't, you should. It changed my life.
ReplyDeleteYes! I read that book a few years ago and it really opened my eyes. I have been meaning to reread it but I think I must have let someone borrow my copy!
