Green Mama Goals
To know me is to know my love for lists. I am notorious for sitting down at night and planning out my to-do list for the following day, week (...and month.) I abuse the note app on my phone for grocery lists gift ideas and "future projects". But there is nothing quite like using my blog as a forum for my listing-obsession because, well, it keeps me honest. Even if like...only three people actually read this, I know that someone somewhere out there might be marginally curious to see if I follow through with anything and that motivates me.
Okay so, right, what's the point of all this then. Well truth be told I have had this idea brewing in the caverns of my mind for ages now. Caverns, guys, caverns. Ever since I read Sleeping Naked is Green it has made me wonder if I could ever do something like that. Now some of my goals are far-reaching like say, down the line I really hope to have a self-sufficient farm. Stuff like that will require several years of hard-work and planning. But then there are short-term goals like repurposing things and making our own toys that I feel can be done right now. My idea is to compile a list of both kind of goals and then update my blog as we go along. The encompassing theme would be to fulfill the biggest goal of them all: Leading a life that respects Mother Earth and raising a daughter in a nature-starved world. I want my family to be conscience of our impact on the environment and to above all, leave it better than it was when we entered it.
Sound good? Great.
Green Mama Goal #1.) Use cloth diapers in place of disposables whenever possible. Research healthy disposable diapers and keep those on hand for daycare and out-n-about times when cloths just aren't practical.
Green Mama Goal #2.) Minimize household clutter by reusing what we already have, fixing things rather than buying something new, donating books, toys and old clothes. "Simplify, simplify, simplify" as Thoreau would say.
Green Mama Goal #3.) Create weekly meal plans and utilize seasonal, local and organic food whenever possible. Make home-cooked meals a priority.
Green Mama Goal #4.) Make our own toys and clothes and limit the amount of plastic and obnoxious toys. In other words, give this mama the motivation to learn to sew! I want to make little stuffed animals for Rosie and the other babies in our family.
Green Mama Goal #5.) Plant a garden.
Green Mama Goal #6.) Build a compost.
Green Mama Goal #7.) Build a rain barrel.
Green Mama Goal #8.) Make cleaning supplies and purge our house of harmful chemicals because cleanliness should not come with nasty toxins.
Green Mama Goal #9.) Find ways to make our home more energy efficient which will serve two purposes: reducing our costs and reducing our waste of energy.
Green Mama Goal #10.) Purchase a home with some acreage and maintain a farm. Someday after I finish my program and become a counselor I want to open up a non-profit for children and teens to get involved with raising animals and growing their own food. I would like to expand more on this because my vision is a little too detailed to post right here, haha.
