Be Like Coco: Blending my Love for Fashion & the Earth

Coco Chanel once said that a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. Those words have always resonated with me. Early on my experience with fashion came from my grandmother, a sharply dressed woman who back in the 50’s was a vivacious model for Budweiser. Even in her later years I could not think of a better role-model for being both classy and fabulous. I know this post is going to get kind of rambly-wambly so feel free to move along.

Though I never ever pictured myself following in her footsteps in the modeling industry, fashion has  played a huge part in my young adult life. To this day one of my favorite things to do is sit down with a pile of magazines and devour the clothes that grace the runway. And I’m not afraid to admit that I love watching ANTM reruns and Project Runway. From super-high stilettos to strapless cocktail dresses---it’s a true, pure love. But as I get older I find myself at odds with loving fashion & hating the industry itself.

Every year I tell myself that I will learn to sew, bring to life the designs in my sketchbooks & do it my way with earth-friendly & fair-trade materials. Because that's my biggest hangup, the unknown. When I pick up a cute skirt and see it was made in China, I can't help but wonder what conditions it was made in. Did the people get decent wages? What chemicals were the fabrics treated with?

I have an upcoming project that I want to pursue, a vision. It is going to take some work and that in itself is a little daunting when I already have so many other obligationss. So who knows...I am still trying to find that niche, that balance of being classy and fabulous, and staying true.
