I have been purging our
closets lately of clothes that we simply do not need. It’s been a great
exercise in assessing what we really need. In fact, I would even say it has
been freeing. The moment I handed over the bags to the Arms of Hope donation
center a small weight was lifted. Moment of honesty here, I struggle with
wanting to be a minimalist and having this attachment to sentimental things. I
think I am getting better, more so now because I am becoming conscientious of
what we bring into our home.
Some of my advice for
those who are looking to downsize your closet is to keep these things in mind:
1.) If you haven’t worn it
in ages, chances are you aren’t going to wear it again. Donate it.
2.) Another option for
that ratty shirt is repurposing it for: cleaning rags, reusable wipes/Kleenex,
or maybe the material can be used in a sewing project.
3.) Take everything out of
your closet. Completely gut it and then gradually put things back. It will help
you figure out where you want everything to go and the end result is a tidy
closet!
4.) Everything should have
a proper place. Investing in a shoe rack or hit up thrift stores for hat boxes
that can be used to store just about everything.
5.) Once you have gathered
things to donate, there are plenty of places in your area that will take ‘em.
Goodwill is a big one, so is Salvation Army, and Arms of Hope (their stores are
Texas Thrift here). You can also donate clothes to homeless shelters or give
them away on freecycle.org. Just be sure that if you put your items in one of
those collection bins that it is actually going to a charity and not meant for
recycling (unless that’s something you want to do!).
