Personal griping aside, I still think cloth diapers are a better choice to most of what's out there for our baby's bum. I knew I wanted to use either inserts or all-in-one's and after narrowing it down to a few brands I decided to go with BumGenius. I bought a few gender neutral ones in yellow, green and blue (which are my fave---they're so pretty!) and went with Rockin' Green cloth diaper detergent to start out with. The detergent came in a bunch of wonderful scents and was made with all natural ingredients even if it was a bit pricey (20 bucks for 45- 90 washes). If you can make your own detergent, I say go for it. I haven't quite worked up to that point in crunchiness though.
Since I absolutely cannot use cloth diapers at daycare, I've decided to go with Earth's Best chlorine free diapers. I already use their wipes and am quite satisfied with them. From fellow hippie mamas and reviewers online Earth's Best seemed like a better choice over it's competitor 7th Generation. I think the chief complaint most folks had with the latter was poor quality. I can't say one way or another seeing as I never tried it though.
Hopefully someday we can go back to using cloth diapers 99.9% of the time, both for the sake of our budget and the environment. For now I'll just have to make do with what we have to work with.

I've found your blog randomly and was browsing through posts, when I read "I'm stuck forking over lots of $$ for diapers that are loaded with nasty chemicals" I simply had to comment! I don't have an alternative for forking over lots of $, BUT I did find a truly Eco-friendly disposable that we absolutely LOVE. I discovered BAMBO Nature diapers through my blog (they work with bloggers, so you might want to contact them) and now we regularly buy them on Amazon for travel (our cloth diapers are too stinky from hard water issues). They are made in Denmark and have the Nordic Swan label, they aren't made in China like most diapers, their factory produces nearly 0 waste, it's pretty incredible. No chemicals in the diapers! They are super absorbent too. I love them so much I tell all naturally-minded mamas about them as a great 'on occasion' alternative to cloth. :)
