The Avett Brothers: The Carpenter
It's no secret that I love the Avett Brothers but when it comes to their newest album, The Carpenter...talk about heart-wrenching disappointment. I am a total fangirl for them but words can't describe how underwhelming these songs were for me. What stood out the most was the change of their sound. Instead of the folk, alternative-country feel I have always adored about their music I was greeted with a bland injection of drums and electric guitar. It was the same sort of stuff I have heard hundreds of times from numerous psuedo-pop/punk bands and not what I would expect from such enormously talented young men.
I was relieved that they didn't turn away completely from the banjo, throwing some of us a bone at least. I do have to admit that I had some giddy joy from the song "Pretty Girl From Michigan" because I can now cross "have the Avett brothers write a song about me" off my bucket-list. (No, really...)
Altogether I would say that this was not their best work and in no means an example of the art they are capable of putting together. Here's to hoping this album eventually grows on me.
